Polyimide Film

Polyimide Film is an innovative material which sits on the high-performance end of the polymer spectrum. Possessing a unique combination of properties allows it to be used in a wide range of applications, which leads us to this article, as there’s a lot we can talk about. If you don’t know much about Polyimide Film (no judgement), don’t worry, you’re about to find out more!

Polyimide Film is normally infusible and often amber in colour, with predominantly aromatic molecules of high thermal stability. We mainly see Polyimide Film used in applications where a reliable and durable product is needed, often in harsh environments. It’s also possible to engineer and convert the material to meet particular requirements for electrical, mechanical, chemical and temperature-related properties.

Main Applications for Polyimide Film:

  • Automotive and industrial – strong resistance to temperature and radiation makes it perfect for demanding applications where critical or harsh exposure occurs
  • Electronics – optimal substrate for applications involving high temperatures
  • Aerospace – the film can be converted and layered into multi-layer insulation
  • Labelling – teamed with the right coating, it can be a great option for labels required in harsh conditions

Main Attributes of Polyimide Film:

  • High thermal stability
  • Radiation resistance
  • Low flammability
  • Moderately high water absorption
  • High wear resistance
  • Lightweight and flexible
  • Very good chemical resistance

Goodfellow carry DuPont™ Kapton®, a range of Polyimide Films. In each of these films, a large measure of the basic properties is combined with an extra attribute, such as increased electrical or thermal conductivity, improved corona resistance, opacity and thermoplasticity. The standard Polyimide Film products range from a thickness of 0.013mm to 0.5mm. Films are also available with the following attributes:

  • Antistatic
  • Enhanced corona resistance
  • Increased thermal conductivity
  • Excellent cryogenic insulation
  • Pigmented for colour
  • Superior dimensional stability
  • Outstanding adhesion characteristics
  • Improved abrasion resistance
