Goodfellow provided the materials necessary for the development of an electric race car in the Formula Student project, which is an international engineering design competition comprising hundreds of teams across the world. These teams competed with their vehicles at a series of international events. With 8 cars in the portfolio, Goodfellow supported the development of the two latest prototypes, the FST 07e and FST 08e. Pulsating Heat Pipe

The image shows Goodfellow aluminum pipes mounted inside an experiment to characterise the performance of a pulsating heat pipe in very low gravity (milli-g) environments. Pulsating heat pipes function by means of the specific distribution of vapor bubbles and liquid "slugs" within very thin capillary tubes, which then act as pumps. The technology is high performance, low cost and benefits from simple construction. A critical parameter of the construction is the internal and external diameter of the aluminum tubes supplied by Goodfellow.

PMMA Light Guide

This image shows a PMMA light guide as supplied by Goodfellow for the Image Ring Cherenkov Counter detecting and identifying charged particles as part of the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) on board the International Space Station. The project involved Goodfellow managing the manufacturing process consisting of injection molding and machining to achieve the most cost effective and reliable method of producing light guides with the desired characteristics.


Energy absorption

This video shows aluminum honeycomb as supplied bv Goodfellow to the University of Birmingham being tested at the Transport Research Laboratory for its energy absorption characteristics as part of the lightweight nose cone structure of a student race car.

Formula Student is an international student engineering competition with Class 1 cars competing to similar rules as those used in Formula SAE in the USA. Student teams from around the world design, build, test, and race a small-scale formula style racing car.

High purity gold target

High Purity Gold Target

This image shows the installation of a fixed high purity gold target supplied by Goodfellow reflecting light in the vacuum chamber of the Solenoid Tracker at RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. This target will be used to study low energy gold on gold collisions, looking for the transition from normal matter to a quark-gluon plasma.
